Each season brings a new set of health risks for the human body. During the summer, we become more susceptible to sunburn, dry skin, sun-damaged and dry hair, and ocular degeneration (wear and tear to the eyes). Summertime nutrition is your answer for the prevention and management of these symptoms.
Let’s start with sunburn and dry skin. It can happen before you know it. There are many over-the-counter creams, lotions, and ointments that are out there to give you relief. However, the best way to nourish dry skin is from the inside out. Antioxidants prevent and delay cell damage. They also increase your body’s natural ability to recover after the damage has been done. The most enjoyable summer foods that are high in antioxidants are blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. They not only make a tasty snack, but they can be a sweet addition to breakfast and a beautiful addition to a lunch or dinner salad.
It doesn’t matter if your hair is short, long, curly, or straight, you have probably experienced the dryness and damage that comes from being in the sun too long on your favorite vacation. Your first line of defense for healthy hair is protein. Protein is the fuel your body needs to strengthen and repair your hair. Proteins contain amino acids that also have the added benefit of maximizing your physical performance while hydrating the muscles and enhancing brain function.
The eyes can get weaker during the summer with the added pressure of the sun and longer days. If you notice your eyes are drier and weaker when you focus on your computer screen or things that are far away, it may be time to add more green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach to your diet. They are loaded with vitamin A that works against macular degeneration and the formation of cataracts. Green peppers are also loaded with vitamin A. Have an egg or two. Eggs are loaded with lutein which also fights against macular degeneration.
Water is your number one beverage for remaining hydrated and mentally focused in the summertime. It helps you stay cool when it’s hot by regulating your body’s temperature. It circulates vitamins and minerals throughout the body. It also lubricates your joints for exercise and summer fun activities. Just make sure you drink at least 100 ounces per day to reap its benefits.
