Here are some things you should avoid doing when you’re waiting to hear back about a job.

The job interview process can be stressful for several reasons. Not only will a candidate have to compose a great resume and cover letter, and do well during their in-person interview, but they’ll also have to wait to hear back from their prospective employer. This period of waiting can be stressful for candidates, especially if they’ve been unemployed for a while. Here are some tips you can use while you’re waiting to hear back from a prospective employer.

Checking In Too Much

Typically, your interviewer will give you a timeline that tells you when you should expect to hear a decision from them. This is generally a reasonable estimate of when you’ll hear back, but due to a variety of factors, it might take a bit longer for them to get back to you. If you’re waiting to hear back from an employer who gave you a timeline, don’t check in with them before that time is over. It’s understandable to want to get their decision sooner than later, but it’s essential to give them time to finalize everything. If the time they have given you has passed, then it’s a good idea to send a short email asking about the status of your candidacy.

Not Applying Elsewhere

Even if you’re sure your interview went well and that you’ll be offered the job, it’s crucial to keep applying for other positions. The job search process can be unpredictable, and a job that may have seemed like a can’t-miss opportunity could end up being filled by someone else. Because of this, it’s up to you to give yourself as many options for employment as possible. Remember that a job isn’t official until you have an offer in hand. If you don’t, keep applying!

Obsessing Over It

It’s understandable to want to hear back about a job opportunity, but when your excitement turns into obsession, it’s time to take a step back. Many candidates overthink details like their interviewer’s tone when they said they’d be in touch soon or the fact that someone from the company looked at their LinkedIn profile. There isn’t much to be gained from overanalyzing small details. You’ve done a lot of hard work to get to this point! After getting through the interview process, it’s time to sit back and wait for the decision to be made.
