4 Tips for Staying Focused in the Office

Keeping your work area free of clutter is a great way to ensure that you stay focused throughout the day.

Among the many challenges that employees face in the workplace, studies show that staying focused is one of the most difficult. With various distractions present in the office; this is no surprise. Bright lighting, constant movement, keyboard tapping, and not to mention cellular devices have proven to be a huge distraction for many. Eliminating all distractions may not be possible, especially if transitioning to a virtual work environment is not an option. However, there are many strategies to implement into your everyday work routine and many ways to reset your work environment to improve your level of focus in the office.

1. Set Clear Goals

Entering your workday without a clear plan is an easy way to get distracted. Attempting to tackle an 8-hour work shift can make it more difficult to stay focused. Instead, create a list that breaks down each of your tasks by the hour. Having a clear and concise plan to complete your work tasks helps to ensure you stay on track. When you find that you become distracted, it will be easier to get back into your workflow and pick up where you left off.

2. Take a Break

When you find it difficult to stay focused on your tasks, one of the best options is to take a break. Removing yourself from your workspace for a moment to clear your head is a great way to reset and dive back into your work. A few things to do during your break could include:

  • Indulging in a snack such as granola, cereal, chocolate, or fruit
  • Meditating in a quiet space
  • Listening to music
  • Taking a walk

3. Put Away Your Cellphone

For many of us, our cell phones play a huge role in our inability to stay focused. They house a lot of distractions including social media, group chats with friends, and our favorite gaming apps. The most effective way to ensure that your phone does not affect your focus is to simply put it away until the end of your workday or your break time. Find a secure place to put it such as in your desk, or your purse, and keep it out of reach.

4. Organize Your Workstation

A messy work area can send your brain into a frenzy. At the end of each workday be sure to set yourself up for success for the next day. You can do this by:

  • Getting rid of any unnecessary papers or files
  • Refilling your utensils such as pens, pencils, paper
  • Putting everything in its appropriate place
  • Purchasing an organizer for pens and paper
  • Keeping your area free of clutter
