Workplace Etiquette

Practicing etiquette in the workplace is a great way to show that you respect your clients and colleagues.

Workplace etiquette is all about the way you conduct yourself around colleagues, customers, clients, and potential business partners. Basically, it is how you present yourself through your behavior, image, communication, and body language. Proper etiquette in the workplace creates a healthy and easy-flowing work environment for everyone involved. Here are a few tips you could follow to ensure you are displaying proper etiquette at work.

1. Respect Differences

Your co-workers are most likely people from many different backgrounds. This means sharing a space with people with political views and beliefs, religious practices, and sexual preferences that may or may not align with your own. Even if you do not particularly agree with their values, it is still important that you respect them.

2. Be Mindful of Your Speech

Stray away from giving unsolicited advice pertaining to touchy subjects such as sexuality, religion, and politics. It is also important to eliminate the use of profanity while at work. Not only is it offensive to some, but it is also immensely unprofessional. You should also avoid gossip completely. If you find it difficult to decide what is considered appropriate to say, keep conversations in the office at bay. Making the decision to opt-out of conversations that are not general or related to work is a great way to do this.

3. Dress Appropriately

If your workplace has specific rules in place when it comes to dress codes, it is important to adhere to those rules. Some companies do not have a strict dress code; however, it is still vital to be mindful of what you wear while at work. Your professional appearance plays an important role in displaying proper etiquette in the workplace. Maintaining a professional appearance and adhering to the dress code ultimately shows the level of respect that you have for yourself, your colleagues, and or clients. A few clothing items to stray away from wearing while in the office could include:

  • T-shirts with controversial writing, quotes, or images.
  • Miniskirts and short shorts
  • Sheer tops, plunging necklines, unbuttoned shirts, and revealing tops
