How To Search For A Job When You’re Already Employed

Learn how to navigate the job search while you’re employed.

Searching for a job can be a long process but as many people say, the best time to search for a job is when you already have one. When you’re looking for a job and unemployed, gaining employment is usually the difference between paying and not paying your bills. Often, this is because the stakes are lower when you already have a job. The job search can be tricky when you want to move on from your current role without alerting your coworkers and your boss. Here are some tips to help you navigate the process of searching for better employment.

Be Discreet

In this situation, discretion is essential. You need to make sure that you avoid any negative consequences at your current job, so make sure that you are cautious. This includes making sure you don’t tell people around the office that you’re planning on leaving and avoiding printing resumes at your office. Word travels fast in a lot of offices and having this information out before you’ve secured another position could leave you without a job. Also, you should make sure to avoid taking phone interviews within earshot of coworkers and resist the urge to search for jobs on work computers.

Give The Right Contact Info

If you’re planning on getting a new job, you’ll want to provide potential employers with contact information that is not linked to your current company. There are a couple of reasons to do this: one is that some employers might view this as a sign that you’re spending time at your current job searching for work, and that you’d do the same if you worked for them. Another good reason is that your current employer might catch wind of your job search if a potential employer leaves a message for you at a company phone number.

Use Outside References

A lot of employers use employee’s references to get a better gauge of their abilities as a worker and their personality as well. When you currently have a job, this presents an issue.  Your current employer is probably the best reference you have, but listing them will alert them to your plans to leave. The best course of action if you aren’t ready to let your employer know about your plans to move on is to only list references who aren’t connected.
