3 Tips For Writing An Effective Resume

A well-written resume can help set you apart from other candidates.

Your resume is one of the most powerful tools you can use to get a job. It’s not only a brief history of your past employment and skills, but it’s also a great way for potential employers to find out more about you. As a result, it’s important to put a good amount of effort into your resume when you are applying for a job. Having a well-crafted resume can be the difference between getting the job and getting passed up for an opportunity, so make sure to use these tips.

Highlight Your Accomplishments

Many job candidates get into the habit of simply copying and pasting their job description when they’re writing a resume. While these descriptions are a great foundation to use, you should also make sure to include what happened as a result of your work. Businesses are results-oriented, so it’s important to show them that you can get the job done. Add specifics like the number of clients you manage or the percentage increase in sales you made. Also, make sure that your most important achievements are listed first so whoever is looking at your resume sees them.

Tailor It To The Position

Most people have talents and work experiences that are important to them, but may not be relevant to every single job they’re applying to. If you’ve changed careers or just have a lot of varied job experiences, you may even have enough information to create separate resumes for your different pursuits. When companies or representatives from staffing agencies are looking at resumes from different candidates, they likely won’t have much time to spend on each one. Make sure your resume includes only your most relevant experiences.

Include Hard & Soft Skills

A lot of job seekers only mention their hard skills in their resumes’ skills sections, but this is a missed opportunity. Many employers are looking for employees that have excellent soft skills like leadership and interpersonal communication. Mentioning these skills can make you stand out from other candidates because they show that you are well-rounded. When a company or staffing agency is searching for candidates to fill a position, many of the applicants are going to have the technical qualifications for the job. Not all of them will have the skills needed to ensure things in the workplace go well after they’re hired.
